Natural & Powerful, The Unique Manuka Factor UMF

Manuka Honey is produced in New Zealand by bees that feed on the manuka bush, Leptospermum scoparium, which grows uncultivated throughout the country. According to the University of Waikato, all honey has anti-bacterial properties but Manuka Honey has additional ones which may benefit certain health conditions such as periodontal disease and ulcers. This extra anti-bacterial property is called Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF. Manuka Honey that has been tested and shown to have a UMF rating of 10 or more is referred to as "active."

Is a Higher UMF Factor Actually Better?

NO, not necessarily!
It seems like most websites promote the idea, that "the higher the UMF Factor, the better". We have found this not be to true, and have discovered the greatest therapeutic range to be between UMF 12-16, as Active Manuka Honey's with a rare UMF Factor of 20, 25 or maybe even higher is too strong and may cause adverse reactions, such as a strong and persistent burning and/or stinging sensation both internally as well as on external wounds. The therapeutic range having been set at between UMF 12-16 is both beneficial and ensures no adverse reactions occur through internal consumption or external uses.

Internal Applications of Active Manuka Honey Includes:

Acid reflux, heartburn, esophagus ulcer, esophagitis, up-set stomach, stomach ulcer, h. pylori, gastritis, duodenal ulcer, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For internal applications, we suggest using an Active Manuka Honey with a UMF Rating between 12-16.

External Applications for Active Manuka Honey Includes:

First degree burn, second degree burn, third degree burn, infectious wounds, ulcers, sores, decubitus sores, pressure sores, diabetic leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, amputation stump wounds, old wounds that are still not healing, scars, surgical scars after hip replacement, cosmetic surgery scars left over after a tummy tuck, a face lift, or liposuction.  For external wounds use an Active Manuka Honey with a UMF Factor of 12-16.

We always carry Active Manuka Honey with in the range between UMF 12-16.

By listening to our Customer's feedback since 1994, we know, that a UMF Factor between 12-16 is the most therapeutic range for both internal as well as external applications of Active Manuka Honey.

Manuka Honey Body Products does NOT mix and match other honey into the Active Manuka Honey such as clover honey, kamahi, tawari, rewa rewa or any other New Zealand honey, in order to achieve a "perfect UMF number" such as UMF 10 / 15 / 20 etc. We take what comes naturally from nature, have the Active Manuka Honey tested and certified by NZLabs for it's natural antibacterial strength.

Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Viral And Anti-Fungal

Similar to its use in healing wounds, Manuka Honey's antibacterial and antimicrobial properties may also make it useful in treating bacterial and fungal infections. In particular, studies have demonstrated that it may be effective against potentially life-threatening methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections, also known as MRSA. A study conducted by the University of Wales Institute-Cardiff demonstrated that the honey can inhibit several proteins necessary for the microbe's biosynthesis. Infections such as MRSA can be deadly. Do not self-treat with Manuka honey. Instead, consult with a trusted health practitioner who can help you decide on a proper course of treatment.

Skin Conditions

The application of Manuka Honey to skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne leads to improvement in these conditions. The active form of Manuka Honey, as measured by its antibacterial activity, penetrates deeper into the site of infection to rid the skin of the bacteria responsible for these conditions. Within the body, the Manuka Honey fights the infection that causes these skin eruptions. The enzymes of the body that inhibit the antibacterial action of normal honey do not stop the extra activity of the Manuka Honey. Manuka Honey can also be used to treat athlete's foot and ringworm infections because of its anti-fungal properties. These infections benefit from both external application and internal consumption of Manuka Honey. The majority of research done on the health benefits of Manuka Honey health was conducted at the University of Waikato in New Zealand by Dr. Peter Moran. He began his research over 20 years ago.

Periodontal Disease

Infections of the gums and bones, which support and surround the teeth, cause periodontal disease. In the early stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, gums become red, swollen and may bleed. In the later stage of the disease, teeth become loose and may fall out. Typical signs of periodontal disease include pain when chewing, bad breath, sensitive teeth and red, swollen or bleeding gums.

In a study published in a 2004 issue of the "Journal of the International Academy of Periodontology," researchers studied the effect of Manuka Honey on gingivitis and periodontal disease. They found that Manuka Honey with an antibacterial activity rated UMF 15 was an effective treatment for gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Manuka Honey for Skin

Manuka Honey possesses a natural skin beautifying ability when consumed internally, however many men and women who suffer from dry skin due to harsh commercial cleansers, or who suffer from acne and rosacea swear by the use of honey for washing their faces. Honey is suitable for use as a daily cleanser because of its antibacterial properties which allow it to gently cleanse the skin without stripping it of all of its natural oils. But the benefits of Manuka Honey come from it’s increased antibacterial potency. Since honey is has a low pH of around 4.5 it is said to be pH balanced and helps to maintain the optimum pH of the skin.

To use Manuka Honey as a cleanser, place a dime sized amount on your hand and rub it on your face using circular motions. Then grab a wash cloth and soak it with warm (not hot) water and place the cloth on your face. The heat of the cloth should open up your pores for deeper cleansing. Remove the wash cloth from your face and re-wet it and gently wipe the honey off of your face. The heat of the water and the wiping motion should remove all the honey from your face. Then feel free to moisturize your face like normal.

Manuka Honey Tastes Exceptional!!!

Even with all of these wonderful therapeutic and restorative qualities, don't forget that Manuka Honey tastes wonderful. It is the perfect "Upgrade," to your normal household variety honey, and as a "Superfood," you can be rest assured that you'll have more energy for the day, and feel great too! Manuka Honey is also "Diabetic Safe," and will not adversely affect blood sugar levels.
